donuts on sunday | project 52 | orange county lifestyle photographer

I like donuts. I think they are yummy. I know that they aren’t the healthiest thing to eat, but I do like donuts.
Actually, I have a bond with donuts.

When I was growing up, my dad would buy donuts for us every Sunday morning and without fail, I might add. Seriously, every . single . Sunday there would be a pink box of a dozen fresh donuts.  I used to go with him to the local donut shop and pick out the ones I wanted (usually that was a strawberry cruller or chocolate with sprinkles).  He’d fill up the remaining dozen with an assortment of glazed twists, chocolate and maple bars, and buttermilk donuts. Next, we’d head to the local 7-11 store where he’d pick up a Sunday newspaper (the San Francisco Chronicle because I grew up in the Bay Area) and then he would let me pick out one candy, whichever candy I wanted, and buy it for me. Back when I was in elementary school, there was no Sweet Factory, and to this day, I still think 7-11 has one of the best candy selections out there. I loved this little Sunday tradition with my dad and probably love it even more now that I am older.

See?  Told you I had a bond with donuts.
And if you are wondering, my dad still gets donuts for him and my mom on Sundays.

So what does my little donut story have to do with anything? The theme of week 5 of the Project 52 that I am participating in is food!  This morning, my family had breakfast at Krispy Kreme at the request of my almost 6 year old.  How can I say no to donuts on Sunday?  I can’t.  And I especially can’t say no to my favorite, chocolate with sprinkles.

It has been almost three weeks since the massive 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti and turned their country upside down.  The news continues to be filled with story upon story of the devastation there and hundreds of thousands of people are still in need of help.  What breaks my heart most is seeing the children of Haiti.   Children who did nothing but their usual routine that day, whether is was going to school, playing outside, or just taking their afternoon nap in their mother’s arms.  And in an instant, they have lost their parents and other family, their shelter, and their basic needs of food and water.
It’s unimaginable.

Like so many of you, I have been looking for ways to help the people of Haiti and am honored to announce that Cindy Chen Photography is partnering with Lenses of Love: Hearts for Haiti, a national group of photographers dedicated to helping the children and orphans of Haiti.  Lenses of Love was started by my wonderful friend and fellow photographer, Sally Clark of Sally C Photography in Denver, Colorado.  She has an amazing heart and I’m so glad to be a part
of her project.

Week three of project 52 (I know, I am a week behind… I’ll be doubling up next week for sure to get caught up) was our first assignment, to “shoot from the hip”.  Shooting from the hip is when you take pictures without looking through the viewfinder of your camera or at an LCD screen.  You just aim in the right direction and click the shutter.  It’s not that easy, but so much fun because it gives you the freedom to interact with your subject, without being hidden behind the camera.

My kids are at a stage (actually, they’ve been at this stage for awhile so I am hoping they get over it soon) where they don’t like having their pictures taken.  You would think that having a mom as a photographer, they would love it, but that is so not the case these days.  Every now and then, I can get them to cooperate, but I often end up with not so natural “say cheese” smiles.  Their real smiles are so much cuter!  When I practiced this week’s assignment on them, it was great because they didn’t realize that they were actually having their picture taken!

I had a hard time deciding which one to post so I’m posting a few… Jump!

And two of my two having fun together (although I think he might be pulling her hair because she tackled him).
At least they are both still laughing, right?
